Recently canine influenza has flared in surrounding states. There have been over 400 confirmed cases in California and one recently confirmed in Grants Pass, OR. It is entirely likely we will see an outbreak in Oregon.

The flu is spread by direct contact with infected pets, contaminated objects, or through the air. Pet’s that go to doggy day care, dog parks, and boarding/grooming facilities are at the highest risk for infection.

We offer a canine influenza vaccine and recommend it for pets with a lifestyle that puts them at higher risk.

Most pets that contract the flu will recover after a brief illness. However, the death rate is about 10% or less. Similarly to humans, the vaccine may prevent infection or weaken the effects of the virus.

We want all of our clients to be informed about the risk factors, so they can make educated health care decisions for their beloved pets. Please call our office if you would like additional information or to discuss your pet’s specific risk factors.
